If you want people to take you seriously as a professional - present a professional image of yourself; it's as simple as that!
So how do we create the right portrait to make that connection? There are three things I like to focus on:
Intention: your headshot should say something about you. This is where the branding piece comes in - we will work out what we’d like people to know about you when they look at your portrait and how that fits in with your brand.
Authenticity: the portrait is YOU. This may sound obvious, but it is important. People can see right through pretense. We will watch for authentic expressions by play-acting scenarios, but drawing on your actual strengths and qualities! This will also guide clothing and styling.
Keep it simple! Most of the headshots I create have a clean white/gray background, and there is a reason for that! Your headshot is YOU. That’s it. Not your business. Not your product. Not your art. Not that tree in your backyard. We aim to make a connection on a personal level! All the other stuff can be communicated with its own professional imagery. That said, simple props can sometimes help for very purpose-specific portraits, usually done in addition to a clean portrait of prop-free YOU. For environmental portraits that show you in action - yes, we can go on location, but those should serve their own purpose beyond your headshot and are their own type of professional imagery.
